CHAPTER 22

The next morning, Kate sat at the kitchen table with her laptop, knowing what she had to do. She still hadn’t summoned up the nerve to look at Billy’s website. Not knowing was somehow easier. Declan hadn’t looked at it either. He left early that morning to chase down a few leads with Sam while Kate focused on Amelia’s background and her connection to Leo.

Kate had put it off for far too long. She typed in the website address and the page popped up immediately. The first thing dead center was the headline – Dashing FBI Couple Hunting the Close Killer, Is There Still Time for Romance?

Kate groaned as she scrolled past it to the photos of them having dinner in Whiskey Bar. There were four photos in all. The most telling was the one where Declan had reached his hand across the table and held hers. It had only lasted a moment during the conversation – the intimate gestures between them so commonplace now. Captured here though, it looked far more romantic than it had been in the moment.

What was most striking was seeing the two of them from a distance the way a casual onlooker might have. She couldn’t deny they looked like a couple very much in sync with each other and in love. The photographer had captured the way Declan often looked at her. It was a mix of friendship and….she struggled to find the word. Kate sat back trying to process the look on his face.

Adoration. That was all that came to Kate’s mind. If she had doubted his feelings for her before now, seeing this photo she couldn’t doubt them any longer. She was surprised by the look on her face. She looked at him with a mix of wonder, amusement, and love. She had to admit it to herself because she was seeing it firsthand. She loved him and he loved her. What kind of love was still up for grabs, but he was right to be hesitant. Their friendship and partnership had to remain intact no matter what else happened between them.

Kate didn’t know what she would ever do without him and that scared her more than anything. She scrolled past the photos and read the article. It was full of speculation about the nature of their relationship. It walked right up to the line of libel but didn’t cross it. Billy never came right out and said they were in a relationship or had compromised the investigation. He never said they had been intimate. He certainly made it look that way with the headline and the photos. The rest was gossip and speculation. It wasn’t nearly as bad as she thought it would be. It was out there and there’d be questions, but they’d survive it.

Setting that aside, Kate focused on more important matters. She pulled the top file from the stack and opened it. Kate went through the information Sam had sent Declan the previous day about Amelia’s case. She had been traveling alone to Paris to celebrate her birthday.
